Week Twenty Prompt
Nov. 14th, 2009 05:12 pmUnderstanding others is knowledge,
"You know, I'm going to kill you someday. I don't understand why you keep me around," said I to my sire as I looked up at him.
"I know what you plan. Yet, when you'll have the chance, not only will you understand me and my weaknesses, I will know yours."
Understanding oneself is enlightenment;
"Someday you'll come to understand who and what you are, Ryan."
"I don't want to."
I looked away from him. He has come to know me too well and it bothers me that he knows more than I.
Conquering others is power,
"You must like this perverse sort of power you have over me. I cannot live without you until I am older and you could holdout the things I need any time you want."
"Yet that would be an abuse of my power and even though I have conquered you, I am still responsible for you. Despite some things I have done, I cannot help but care for you. Would any sane mother abandon their child? No. The same is true for vampires and those they create."
"Then why take responsibility for a person who will hate you?"
"You can still love a person who hates you. No one is happy at the beginning."
Conquering oneself is strength;
"Why haven't you taken advantage of me yet," I said suddenly.
My words startled him and he looked at me.
"Because I have enough self-control to respect you."
Contentment is wealth,
"Are you happy?" he asked me.
"No."
"I am. Perhaps now I'll retire from hunting those damn vampire hunters."
"I don't understand. Is it because you have me?"
"Partly, but it does get tiring having to fight. Do you not agree?"
"I'll never stop fighting you."
"Sometimes you do – you just don't like to admit that sometimes you're content to be here with me. Usually only after you've fed, so maybe you just don't remember."
Forceful conduct is willfulness;
I was hungry, but I didn't want to admit it to my sire. But if I was to ever get strong enough to kill him, then I needed to eat. Not eating made me feel weak and I hated that.
So I forced myself out of bed, but as soon as I tried to stand, my legs would not support me. My sire, who had his back to me while he was at his writing desk, was soon there to catch me.
"Why didn't you tell me?" he scolded me.
"Because I hate you and I hate my dependence on you."
"You're a willful one, aren't you?"
Not losing one's rightful place is to endure,
"I hate you! I lost everything because of you!"
"It's a temporary loss, I assure you. You can do whatever you want when you can leave me."
To die but not be forgotten is longevity.
"I'm dead, but not dead. That's so odd."
"I think that's why people are bothered by us so much. We are the dead that will not forgotten."
